Behavioural Inhibition Questionnaire - Short Form (14 Items)

The Behavioural Inhibition Questionnaire – Short Form – 14 items (BIQ-SF14) (Edwards, 2007)

The BIQ-SF 14 consists of 14 items from the full scale of the Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire (BIQ; Bishop et al., 2003). The original scale consists of 30 items assessing behavioral inhibition in six contexts tapping three domains: social novelty (unfamiliar adults, 4 items; peers, 6 items; performance situations, 4 items), situational novelty (preschool/separation, 4 items; unfamiliar situations, 8 items), and physical challenges (4 items).

Dr Susan Edwards, adapted the BIQ in her PhD thesis (supervised by Professor Ron Rapee) to produce a 14-item short form of the BIQ. This measure showed strong psychometric properties: good internal reliability and construct validity. A copy of Chapter 3 from Dr Edward's thesis can be downloaded the links below.

As with the original scale, BIQ-SF14 items are rated on a 7-point scale from 1 (hardly ever) to 7 (almost always) as to how frequently the item represents the child's behaviour. Items are completed by the parent or caregiver. Please click on the links below to download the scale, information about its dimensions, and scoring instructions.
